Crisis Worker Certification

The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention (CASP), in partnership with the American Association of Suicidology (AAS), offers individual certification for crisis workers. The certification process signifies that individuals practicing crisis management have met the standards and requirements defined by the Board of Crisis Worker Examiners of AAS.

Certification means that the certificate holder has met or exceeded a test of knowledge, experience, and ability to perform effectively in the crisis field. Experts in the field of crisis services have developed this exam.

CASP will facilitate this process for Canadians. If you are interested in receiving a manual that outlines the process or in setting up an exam site for your group, contact the CASP Office.

The Lethbridge Community College of Alberta offers a Crisis Worker Certification Review Training Program for professionals, volunteers and students working in environments requiring crisis intervention skills. The program assist individuals in preparing for the AAS/CASP Crisis Worker Exam.  3 day course for $188.32.

The Suicide Prevention Training Programs (SPTP) branch of the Centre for Suicide Prevention provides caregiver training in suicide intervention, awareness, bereavement, crisis management, and related topics.

The Support Network has an online course called "Crisis Intervention Basics". This self-study program can serve as a review of the basic approach to crisis and suicide intervention. For those with experience but limited formal training, it can help to ground that experience in the relevant theory. To find out more, go to The Support Network and click on "Workshops and Training".
